When propagating bonsai, the great advantage lies in the ability to influence the shape and form of the tree from the very beginning. While it takes longer to grow a tree from seed, this method allows you to put your personal touch on both the size and design early on. By using shallow bonsai pots, the plant develops a more compact growth than wild saplings found in nature.

Introduction
The Bodhi Tree, also known as the Sacred Fig, is the holiest tree in Buddhism and is excellently suited for bonsai styling. The soft leaves are heart-shaped with a characteristic long tip; in sunny locations, new growth emerges with a reddish tint. On older trees, the roots often wrap around the trunk like an intricate network, contrasting with its whitish-grey bark. These plants can become ancient and carry deep cultural significance.

Propagation
Seeds can be sown directly onto moist seed-starting soil without prior treatment. With steady moisture and warmth (20 to 26°C), they germinate after about 3 to 7 weeks. Cultivation is relatively straightforward as long as temperatures remain stable.

Location and Light
This Ficus requires a lot of light. Choose the brightest spot in the room (a south-facing window is ideal). From the end of May, a bright, sunny, and wind-sheltered outdoor location is possible. If there is insufficient light or heat, the plant will react by shedding its leaves.

Watering and Nutrients
Always allow the soil to dry out before each watering. From April to the end of September, you can supply the bonsai with fertiliser every 2-3 weeks. In winter, fertilising every 6 weeks is sufficient.

Growing Medium
Suitable options include ready-mixed indoor bonsai soil or a mix of 1 part loam, 2 parts peat, and 1 part sand. Repotting is only necessary or advisable every 2 to 3 years.

Pruning
Pruning the branches is possible year-round. Cut back new growth of 6 leaves to 2 leaves. With vigorous growth, pruning can be done up to three times a year. This results in smaller leaves and finer ramification.

Winter Storage
The Bodhi Tree must be kept warm during winter (15° to 24°C). It does not tolerate cold; temperatures below this range usually lead to immediate leaf loss.

Important Growing Tips
Use professional seed-starting soil or coconut coir for sowing. Keep the medium evenly moist during germination – not wet. Cover the tray with clear film or glass and ventilate every three days to prevent mould. Limit direct sunlight for the first six weeks after germination. After 5–8 weeks, the seedling can be carefully transplanted.
