When propagating bonsai, the great advantage lies in the ability to influence the shape and form of the tree from the very beginning. While it takes longer to grow a tree from seed, this method allows you to put your personal touch on both the size and design early on. By using shallow bonsai pots, the plant develops a more compact growth than wild saplings found in nature.

Introduction
This easy-care bonsai is at the top of the miniature tree charts in Thailand. It can be cultivated as both an outdoor and indoor bonsai (ideally in a conservatory). The Chaste Tree develops a strong trunk with beautiful beige-coloured bark. In late summer and autumn, it produces numerous light blue-violet, lightly scented flowers. Note that it requires plenty of light to prevent leaf drop and will naturally shed its leaves during the winter dormancy period.

Propagation
Simply scatter the seeds on moist seed-starting soil, cover thinly with soil, and press down lightly. Keep evenly moist until germination, which usually occurs after 2-4 weeks.

Location and Light
This robust little tree loves bright to sunny spots. Plenty of air and light are essential. If the location is too dark, the plant will react by shedding its leaves.

Watering and Nutrients
In the summer months, allow the soil to dry slightly before each watering. During winter dormancy, water only sparingly. During the flowering period, you can supply the bonsai with fertiliser every 2 weeks.

Growing Medium
Standard commercial bonsai soil is highly suitable. Although the plant develops a strong root system, it only needs repotting every 2 to 3 years.

Pruning
As Vitex has a tendency towards strictly upright growth, it is recommended to grow the tree in "tiers". After the formation of 4 to 6 pairs of leaves, prune them back to 2 or 3 pairs. In winter, thin and dry branches should also be pruned out.

Winter Storage
Hardly water at all during the dormancy phase. Indoor overwintering should be at 6 to 15°C. Outdoors, it can withstand down to -15°C if protected by placing the root ball in peat.

Important Growing Tips
Use professional seed-starting soil or coconut coir for sowing, as these media provide good aeration and have low nutrient content. Keep the medium evenly moist during germination – not wet. Cover the tray with clear film or glass and ventilate every three days to prevent mould. Limit direct sunlight for the first six weeks after germination. After 5–8 weeks, the seedling can be carefully transplanted. Take care not to damage the delicate new roots.
