When propagating bonsai, the great advantage lies in the ability to influence the shape and form of the tree from the very beginning. While it takes longer to grow a tree from seed, this method allows you to put your personal touch on both the size and design early on. By using shallow bonsai pots, the plant develops a more compact growth than wild saplings found in nature.

Introduction
The African Wisteria is a small deciduous tree with an upright and graceful growth habit. It is considered one of the most beautiful flowering trees of Southern Africa and is highly suitable for bonsai due to its rapid growth and spectacular, dark purple flower clusters that resemble classic wisteria. Flowering occurs in spring, before the glossy green leaves emerge.

Propagation
Propagation is done via seeds and can be performed indoors year-round. To improve water absorption, the seed coat can be lightly sanded (scarified) before soaking in lukewarm water for approximately 24 hours. Sow the seeds about 1 cm deep with 5 cm spacing in a moist sowing medium. In a warm location, germination typically starts after 1-5 weeks.

Location and Light
The plant thrives best in a full sun position. However, as a very young plant, it should be protected from the strongest midday sun and placed in partial shade until it is more established.

Watering and Nutrients
The tree should be watered evenly, and it benefits from occasional misting of the leaves. From March to November, apply liquid bonsai fertiliser every four weeks. Slow-release fertiliser should only be used for older, more established trees.

Growing Medium
African Wisteria prefers a well-drained and airy medium. A classic mix can consist of good quality potting soil mixed with 25% coarse sand or specialized bonsai soil.

Pruning
As the plant is fast-growing, early shaping is recommended. For flowering trees, major pruning should only take place after flowering has finished. Allow shoots to develop 4-5 leaf pairs and then cut back to 2-3 leaf pairs.

Winter Storage
African Wisteria originates from subtropical regions and does not tolerate frost. It must be overwintered in a bright, frost-free location at a minimum of 5–8 °C to protect the roots in shallow pots.

Important Growing Tips
Use professional seed-starting soil or coconut coir for sowing, as these media provide good aeration and have low nutrient content. Keep the medium evenly moist during germination – not wet. Cover the tray with clear film or glass and ventilate every three days to prevent mould. Limit direct sunlight for the first six weeks after germination. After 5–8 weeks, the seedling can be carefully pricked out (transplanted). Take care not to damage the delicate new roots.
